The Process For IT Professionals
How we source for our candidates:
You send your resume to Wolverine through a job posting, or a referral, or a Wolverine recruiter finds your resume in a database (either online or proprietary). Resumes are a key step! Make sure yours is great.
One of Wolverine’s Senior Recruiters (we have no junior recruiters) scans resumes for matching with a particular job opening, and calls you to initially go over the basic job description, skill sets required, and a quick discussion on non-technical parameters (location, pay, etc.).
If you and the Research Recruiter agree that the position is a great fit, they’ll pass you along to the recruiter assigned to the particular job. At this time you’ll be requested to provide written permission for background checks, and at least two professional references. We are not necessarily going to call your references immediately, but you should tell us if any references are off-limits until an offer is made.
With our full lifecycle recruiters, you can expect 1-3 phone interviews, and possible requests for resume work, before the presentation is made to the hiring party at our client’s location. You will be asked to specify a very certain parameter for compensation and benefits requirements.
The next step is to wait for manager feedback. This could take hours, days, or sometimes even weeks, on a case by case basis. Hiring is only one part of a person’s responsibilities, and it depends on their schedule and the schedule of their teams, along with the urgency of the work and the timeline for hire. Please do not take offense at the duration of the waiting period. It is never a comment on your viability as a candidate. As soon as we hear from our client, we contact you.
If the client has declined to interview, we’ll call you with as much feedback on the circumstances as we can get. Often this is very little. Many of the staffing processes today are run by online services, and there is no direct person to person contact. Many times positions are closed and we are never informed of the reason.
If the client is proceeding to an interview, we will prepare you and coach you on interviewing skills, and email you the exact details of your appointment. You should expect one phone screen, and one meeting in person. This varies according to client and position, but it’s a good process to expect.
Our expectation during the interview process is that you’ll consider us your consultative, professional career team. Just as you would treat your best mechanic, your doctor, or your lawyer, we expect you to inform us of details in your life; the progress of other opportunities, your personal preferences, your concerns and the concerns and preferences of your family. Without this knowledge, we cannot represent you accurately and you might find that you don’t get an offer for the job you really wanted. Our job is to get you the offer you want.
If things are going well up to this point, an offer should come through. Again, sometimes there’s no set duration on how long this takes. Usually the client interviews a set number of people before they make a decision. With the scheduling process, it could once again be days or weeks until the client makes a firm decision. Again, remember not to take this as an indication of their level of interest!
Once the offer is in, the best next step is to accept it, and set a start date, and start planning for it. For post-accepted offer and job start tips, see our Job Tips page.
